"Reversing the motif in the image gave me the freedom to address pictorial problems. (...) the motif has no weight, insofar as it is only interested in the image, not in the representation."

- Georg Baselitz

Georg Baselitz (1938) is a German painter, sculptor, and engraver whose work draws as much from his personal memories as from the German imagination, particularly through the history of his country’s painting. His very neo expressionist esthetics is found in the vigor of his brush strokes and the way he carves wood with a chainsaw are evidence of the considerable energy he puts into his work. It also betrays the painful and scathing view he has of his people’s history.
